Business Idea #72: Boot Camp Instructor (In Detail)

I love this start up idea! Boot Camp classes are such a big trend now and when you break it down, its a fairly simple business, especially in a location where its always nice out!

Business Idea: Offer a Fitness Boot camp in your area.  Outdoor is one of the best/cheapest, but subject to weather conditions.  If you can find somewhere inside might be better.

Start Up Costs: Not much.  Boot camp classes don’t really require a lot of tools. Its more about your ability to have a plan and schedule for each class.  Depending on where you have it, you might want to invest in a few weights, kettle balls, etc.  Don’t think you need a lot of each since you can just have stations that people work through. You should have an insurance plan incase someone gets injured.  Having CPR is always a minimum. Location is pretty simple.  Lots of public parks would work well.  If you can get a gym space even better, but I really think outdoors are great.  Public parks allow for great props and tools for exercises and you don’t even need to have fancy equipment in the parks.

Target Market: Stick with your geographical area.  Keep it close to home, since people will want to live close to wherever you are hosting the camp.  If you are doing an early morning, you need it to be close to where people live.  Another suggestion would be if you wanted to put on a noon camp, look for somewhere around companies (you would want companies that have showers for their employees, see if you can find this out before). Be sure to refine your group.  Perhaps depending on your neighborhood has a lot of new mothers?  Then do a boot camp that incorporates holding the kids or using their fancy strollers and new yoga pants!

Pricing: Make sure you get people to pay the full series up front, 8 weeks, 16 weeks, whatever. Then people have vested and committed.  Don’t charge weekly.  You can offer a drop in rate, but make that rate is more than if a customer paid in full.  Full payment means you have a committed group.  This is key to make sure people show up, especially if you are doing an early morning class.  Set pricing that is reasonable.  Compare to how much an hour of personal training costs in your area, set at a fraction of that.  I would suggest even calling that out in your ads or sales pitch.  You might want to cap the number of people in a group so its each to manage.  Make sure you run your break even analysis.

Marketing: Get some posters made up, start your facebook site, get the word out there.  You’ll probably find that when people join they will join in groups of more than one, so spend time trying to sign one person up, and it should yield you more than one person.  Focus on a region for marketing.  People will want to be close to where you offer the classes.  Another good strategy is offer a group discount.  If someone can bring in 5 people to join, they all get 10% off or maybe the organizer gets ½ price.  Don’t be afraid to give a little way to get more customers when starting out.

Other Notes: Experience.  Yeah maybe you have some trainer courses, but I really don’t think people care too much about that.  I think they care more about your class plans and your overall appearance.  I would not recommend trying to start this if you were not very fit, but the good thing is you don’t need to be super fit since your telling others what to do vs doing it yourself!  Just get good workout gear!

Set timelines and measurements.  Take measurements before you start of your participants so you can measure results.
